THE Reverend Fred Nile - possibly the only Australian politician to thank God before thanking his voters - yesterday bade farewell to the NSW Parliament as he readied himself for a run to the Senate.
Rev Nile, the longest-serving member of the Upper House, chose yesterday to say goodbye to the chamber he has sat in for 23 years. In typical Nile style, the evangelist had a politically rare pecking order in crediting those who put him in the Legislative Council in 1981 and kept him there since. "I regard that as a miracle," he said of his election. "For me sitting in this Parliament is always a wonder to me - how did that happen? "So I do thank God and I thank the voters for giving me that opportunity."
